We recently caught up with Rich Martin, Senior Sound Designer at ENVY Advertising which is the new advertising and branding arm of ENVY, to find out about the challenges currently facing audio mixers, and how the Avid Pro Tools | S6 M10 is aiding the audio team’s creativity.
“It’s an interesting time to be a sound mixer, with lots of changes—both technological and process-oriented—that must be negotiated.”
“The Pro Tools | S6 helps us to be much more efficient.”

Challenges and solutions
“We’re currently in a crossover to a tapeless environment, so until it’s complete we cover all bases and deliver on tape and digital. Fortunately that doesn’t have much of an impact when most of what we work on is 60s or under, and offline bounce in Pro Tools has definitely helped to speed things up too. I do look forward to the day of digital-only delivery to cut out waiting times for set up and decks, but we might find ourselves more removed from our machine room and assistants which is not necessarily a good thing – it will mean placing more emphasis on good communication.
Tight deadlines and late changes are probably our biggest challenges. A locked edit is less and less ‘locked’ these days, but we know the clients are under pressure – we just have to be adaptable, have good communication with the picture guys, and try and get decisions made as early as possible. We also have to use our time with the clients effectively as they are often overseeing Flame or the grade at the same time.”
Greater efficiency and productivity
“The Pro Tools | S6 helps us to be much more efficient because of the flexibility of the set-up. When I first saw it, I thought it looked great and the touchscreen was really nice. It’s a very compact desk, which is great for the way I mix due to the level of detail involved on a day-to-day basis. I find the control position and ease of ‘attentioning’ tracks has led me increasingly back to the faders, which has increased my productivity.
Another of the key features for me is the colour coding of faders, EQ and compression, they help me to ensure that the sound of the mix is how I want it. It’s also easy to access specific tracks, it springs all my tracks up on the touchscreen in front of me, bringing any one of them to my right hand with one touch.
The Pro Tools | S6 delivers superior ergonomics and intelligent studio control, and it’s able to deliver the performance we need to complete projects faster whilst producing the best sounding mixes possible.”
