In the months leading up to NAMM, we were lucky enough to become friends with the inspiring team at SoundGirls, a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring and empowering the next generation of women in audio. Through year-round educational and social events, the organization creates a supportive community for women in audio and music production, providing tools, knowledge, and support to further their careers. SoundGirls supports women working in professional audio and music production by highlighting their successes and providing a place for them to connect, network, and share advice and experiences.
Executive Director and Co-Founder Karrie Keyes started the group in 2013, inspired by an AES panel hosted by Women’s Audio Mission she participated in with other woman audio professionals and became convinced of the opportunities for talented women in audio that could be made possible by joining forces and supporting one another. “I entered the world of live audio over 27 years ago. Back then I was a novelty, you did not see a woman behind the mixing board let alone unloading a truck full of sound equipment. At that time I felt like I was breaking down doors for other women and we would eventually see women on sound crews all over the country. Sadly, 27 years later women in live audio are still a rare occurrence.
Throughout the year, SoundGirls hosts workshops and seminars across the globe and have developed the Live Sound Camp for Girls, reaching over 100 girls last summer, with over 70% attending on scholarships. They have established a scholarship fund, providing members with essential support to help them pursue an education in audio, “but most importantly we have put a female face to the job of audio engineer. We strongly believe “You Can’t Be What You Can’t See” and have set out to inspire young women to enter the professional audio field.”
Avid supports the fantastic community at SoundGirls, and we’re honored to be able to sponsor their Mentoring Event for members on Thursday, January 19th from 6:30 to 9:00 in Anaheim. If you are interested in joining the global ranks of their 2,600 members, we encourage you to contact them and register for this valuable event. Co-hosted by former Avid Audio General Counsel Heather Rafter, the networking session is packed with renowned audio engineers including Leslie Ann Jones, Karrie Keyes, Grace Royse, Jett Galindo, Catharine Wood, Jessica Berg, Tiffany Hendren, Claire Murphy and Fela Davis whose roster of top live sound artists is too numerous to list. The Mentoring Event quickly sold out, but there are additional valuable and fun events during or near NAMM offered by SoundGirls, and you can contact the organization at firstname.lastname@example.org to lend your support and ask questions. We wish SoundGirls endless fun and success in their audio careers!
