Get Five Top Plug-ins Free with S6L

By in Live Sound, Music Creation

VENUE | S6L already features the most powerful onboard processing of any live sound system available, leveraging Avid’s powerful HDX-powered processing engine to run AAX DSP plug-ins natively on the system without needing any external hardware. These plug-ins, both Avid and 3rd party, offer a huge assortment of studio-quality tools to help you achieve the results you need for your artists, whatever the challenge. Although S6L already comes with a comprehensive collection of sound sculpting tools (see the bottom of this page for a list of the current plug-in bundle that come with each system), we have canvassed top engineers using S6L on some of the world’s biggest tours to put together a special, limited time bundle of their favorite 3rd party plug-ins. Starting August 15th and running through December 31, 2016, you will receive five of the most state-of-the art plug-ins in use today from the world’s most respected AAX DSP developers like McDSP, Sonnox, and Flux, with your S6L purchase, including:

  • McDSP MC2000 multiband compressor
  • McDSP ML4000 high-resolution limiter and multiband processor
  • McDSP 6030 Ultimate Compressor
  • Sonnox Oxford Inflator
  • Flux Pure Limiter v3

Lets take a closer look at each of these and explore why these are come of the most useful plug-ins for live sound mixing.

McDSP MC2000

McDSP MC2000

One of the plug-ins that first put McDSP on the map, MC2000 is a comprehensive multiband compressor that includes three compressor plug-ins: MC202 (2-band), MC303 (3-band), and MC404 (4-band). All three plug-ins provide complete control of multiband dynamic compression, including output (make-up gain), threshold, compression (ratio), attack, and release. And the MC2000 wouldn’t be a McDSP plug-in if it didn’t feature some of their “special sauce” features, in this case both non-standard Knee and BITE controls that provide unique and unprecedented articulation of compression characteristics, as well as offering multiple peak detection circuit types to give you even greater flexibility in dialing in the right sound. Finally, McDSP has known since their earliest days for the incredibly low latency of their plug-ins, which is appreciated by engineers using them for live applications, especially when aligning speaker arrays or mixing in-ears.

McDSP ML4000

McDSP ML4000

The ML4000 is a high-resolution limiter and multiband processor that actually consists of two plug-ins: the ML1 mastering limiter and the ML4 multiband gate, expander, and compressor that then feeds into the ML1 limiter. This is one of McDSP’s most respected plug-ins, and one that gets regularly mentioned when I speak with live sound engineers.

Snake Newton's ML4000 settings on Simon LeBon's vocal

Snake Newton, FOH engineer for Duran Duran, has been using McDSP plug-ins extensively on the band’s “Paper Gods” tour and recently shared his experiences with the ML4000 that has become his go-to tool: “Firstly, I’m a big fan of multiband de-noising to remove spill from the stage on open mics. My previous setup sometimes involved two instances of noise reduction in a chain, because the threshold was global so the trigger didn’t always work well if the ratio between mids and highs wasn’t what the machine was expecting. With the ML4000, you have a Ratio and Threshold for each band. This gives me a great deal of flexibility that I didn’t have before. “The ML4000 also gives me a great multiband compressor/maximizer setup that works seamlessly across masters and submasters. What I didn’t expect was that I totally fell in love with the Limiter. So much character where you need colour, or for transparent work, no character at all—just invisible! The single channel version makes drums super tough, mixes sounding classically ‘pressed against the ceiling’ loud, but still dynamic sounding. This replaced my previous favourite limiter, surpassing it in so many respects.”

McDSP 6030 Ultimate Compressor

McDSP 6030

The 6030 Ultimate Compressor actually offers ten different compressors, ranging from unique McDSP creations to vintage Neve, Fairchild, LA-2A, and 1176 emulations. Aside from sounding fantastic and giving you a huge range of sonic colors to choose from, it’s incredibly easy to experiment with different sounds. Because all ten compressors are loaded at once as a single plug-in, you can easily jump between the different modules to A/B which works best for a selected sound source. And even when McDSP serves up its dead-on vintage emulations, they always add some special features that let you go beyond what the original hardware was capable of.

Sonnox Oxford Inflator

Sonnox Oxford Inflator

The Sonnox Oxford Inflator is a very interesting, yet powerful, tool—it’s basically harmonic enhancement, but in a very clever way. The interface is very simple, but there is a lot of clever stuff going on behind the scenes. You can bring things forward and make them more present with just a touch of Inflator, often without even needing to EQ or compress. And it’s fairly transparent, adding a just a little bit of warmth without adding too much color.

Flux Pure Limiter v3

Flux Pure Limiter v3

The Flux Pure Limiter v3 is a mastering limiter that is incredibly transparent, letting you crank the gain without damaging the perceived audio quality. The Limiter uses Flux’s proprietary technology to generate a release envelope that ensures that none of the usual pumping of smashing of transients is produced. Another cool feature of the Pure Limiter is its Morphing Slider, which allows you to morph between the parameter settings of slot A/B in real time for really creative and useful real-time tweaking.

We hope that you’re as excited as we are about this special bundle, and remember that this limited time offer runs from August 15 through December 31, 2016.
