IBC 2014: Staying on Top of the Story When You’re in the Field

By in Topics

You’re out of the office but still working. In fact, you are rarely even in the office. Life and work on the road are something a lot of us are becoming increasingly familiar with as the media industry continues its rapid transformation. This week, thousands of media professionals are working, but just not in the office, at IBC 2014 in Amsterdam.

So the challenge for a lot of professionals is how to stay connected when the office doesn’t mean you are in a room with four walls in a building but the office is, in fact, a laptop in whatever location you are.

And of course working on the road is not just limited to being in one country, A someone who travels internationally on a routine basis, speaking to customers about the Avid Everywhere vision and how the MediaCentral Platform is addressing the most pressing challenges facing the industry today, I can testify to rarely being “in the office” in a traditional sense.

The risk to reputation of something being published that hasn’t gone through the right approvals is huge.

So how do we address these kinds of issues? Avid broadcast solutions are overcoming some of the traditional, physical barriers that have impacted on newsrooms for years, allowing reporters and producers to work however, whenever and wherever they want.

And this week at the IBC 2014, we will be showcasing how it can be done.

Let’s take the example of social media publishing. Complex business that, right? Trying to keep on top of multiple sites – Twitter, Facebook, your web content management system, YouTube – and having to use multiple pieces of expensive hardware to spit out all those different file types, while all the time needing to ensure you are on top of what is being posted in your name. The risk to reputation of something being published that hasn’t gone through the right approvals is huge.

So Avid has designed Media | Distribute, our multi-platform distribution service to simplify the whole process, and allow you to keep in touch and on top of things regardless of where you are. Your production team can all contribute regardless of their location. All through a web-browser.

Media | Distribute is an option on Avid Media Central | UX, the lightweight web-enabled user experience of the Avid MediaCentral Platform, which integrates with both iNEWS and Interplay Production to give you access to all of your stories and all of your video in one place.

Your system could be in Amsterdam. Your system could be in London. It doesn’t matter. Your office is your laptop and you are in control.

So you can be a news producer who is a delegate at IBC 2014, on wireless with your laptop, and able to connect to your system. Your system could be in Amsterdam. Your system could be in London. Your system could be in Sydney. It doesn’t matter. Your office is your laptop and you are in control.

With Media | Distribute this means you are able to monitor, review, reject or publish any stories and accompanying video submitted for approval by the production team. So if you want a change made, you can simply use the built-in messenger system in MediaCentral to tell the production team what changes you want, with a link to the sequence you are reviewing. They can make the change and in real time you can review it. All done via a browser on either Mac or Windows OS.

The other great thing about Media | Distribute is that it integrates with commonly used transcoding solutions, web content management systems and online video providers. It does the complex tasks in the background, leaving the creative teams to concentrate on what they should be concentrating on – producing inspiring content that can be made available to audiences on any platform.

At IBC 2014, Avid are showcasing Media | Distribute multi-platform distribution along with their other integrated broadcast solutions that tackle the most pressing challenges facing the media industry today and in the future.
