In the heart of Edinburgh’s historical centre, renowned nightclub and live music venue, The Liquidroom, has hosted some of the greatest, international music and comedy acts. Since its establishment in 1997, the 2,500-capacity venue, spread over three venue spaces, has supplied live audio production and technical support for a vast array of music acts and genres, ranging from rock to country, pop to indie, including Snow Patrol, Calvin Harris, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, and Black-Eyed Peas – to name a few.
Maintained by a team of experienced sound engineers, The Liquidroom stay up to date with the latest live sound and pro-audio solutions, ensuring familiarity with state-of-the-art and industry-leading technology that provides a ‘spec’ friendly environment for visiting engineers. For its 20th anniversary, The Liquidroom turned to Avid to modernize its foundation – the venue’s live sound system. The upgrade resulted in the installation of two powerful Avid VENUE | S6L consoles.
Heading up the team at The Liquidroom is Glynne Dewar, the venue’s operations manager, who oversees the venue’s technical set-up and spearheads its technological advancements. “It’s common practice here at The Liquidroom to draw together a set of criteria when considering a new investment or upgrade, outlining the crucial components of what the technology needs to do for us, and our clients,” says Dewar. “We were completely confident in choosing Avid. We looked at other manufacturers but Avid really stood out in front.”
“We had three specific requirements when considering our investment in a new live sound desk: extended warranty with the manufacturers, ease of use for visiting engineers, and familiarity of the brand,” adds Dewar. “We’ve had problems in the past with product reliability so it was important for us to invest in a product and service that covers all three of our specifications. The advantage warrantee system was crucial in making our final decision.”
Powered by the desk’s Ethernet AVB – the underlying network architecture connecting the system’s components – Avid Pro Tools has also proven to be an asset to the productions held at The Liquidroom alongside the Avid VENUE | S6L. The trustworthy partnership between the two Avid solutions covers the venue’s live sound technical offering, resulting in an effective Avid workflow delivery.
“We chose to add Avid Pro Tools to our investment,” says Dewar. “The straightforward design of the whole system, from the software to the hardware, has simplified processes and made our lives easier. Ultimately, it’s the sound quality that matters; and the S6L has met the high standards we continue to set for the venue.”
Replacing its 7-year old Midas consoles, the SSE Audio group installed the Avid VENUE | S6L consoles at the venue’s largest music space. Since its installation this summer, The Liquidroom has wasted no time in harnessing the power of the new Avid VENUE | S6L desks, supplying live sound for the city’s highly-anticipated events, including the annual Edinburgh Fringe Festival: the world’s largest arts festival, jam-packed with music, comedy, theatre, and dance performances.
Remaining loyal to the company’s Scottish roots, The Liquidroom hosted a series of musical events as part of the cultural festival which took place in several venues across Edinburgh. Its location – nestled just below Edinburgh Castle in the capital’s Old City – makes it a popular venue for festival go-ers and music acts alike. Beginning the roll out of the venue’s new Avid live sound system was Bwani Junction’s show at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, who performed their rendition of Paul Simon’s Graceland album at The Liquidroom.
Anticipated to gather a large audience, the team knew they could rely on their new live sound console to support Bwani Junction’s set. Followed by shows from Dirty Harry, a Blondie tribute act, and Hip-Hop Sound Machine, an audio-visual performance covering the greatest music in hip-hop, the flexible Avid VENUE | S6L console catered for the festival’s diversity that it’s famous for.
The Avid VENUE | S6L will also deliver live sound for the venue’s upcoming musical performances, including singer-songwriter, Newton Faulkner, the rapper, Lowkey, and British rock band, The Amazons.
