If you’ve spent any time on the Avid Blogs, you’ve probably heard of Avid Artist | DNxIO. It’s a next-gen video interface that enables you to capture, monitor, and output media quickly—in the highest quality possible. Not only will it accelerate your HD, Ultra HD, 2K, and 4K workflow, it’s incredibly open and flexible, so you can use it with your favorite Avid and third-party creative tools.
Although it’s a relatively new piece of gear, it’s already making huge waves throughout the pro video industry. The fine folks at ProVideo Coalition recently sat down for an interview with Todd Ulman, the founder and CEO of Mad Old Nut Productions, to discuss how Artist | DNxIO is powering their workflow.
With clients like The Walking Dead, Gotham and Legends of Tomorrow, Mad Old Nut is one of the hottest post-production and Avid rental facilities in Hollywood right now. With such a star-studded roster, Mad Old Nut is extremely committed to providing only the most reliable and cutting-edge production solutions. They primarily supply Avid products and solutions—since most of their clients are already using an Avid workflow—and they currently have more than 100 systems out in production. When they heard about the new Artist | DNxIO breakout box, they were eager to get their hands on it.
“Previously, we used a lot of Blackmagic stuff, like their Thunderbolt I/O. So, once an Avid-branded unit came out, we wanted to jump on it to see if it’s faster and better. Once [Avid] rolled out the proper driver and the DNxHR support, it was a vast improvement. Whenever we do DNxHR now, it always happens in the DNxIO suite. We’re actually working in DNxHR a lot.”
—Todd Ulman, founder and CEO of Mad Old Nut Productions
Prior to Artist | DNxIO, Mad Old Nut used several different solutions to handle larger-format content. But they prefer to keep everything in the Avid universe, and they quickly realized the Artist | DNxIO eliminated software delays and enabled editors to work much faster. Which is pretty important for a video editor who’s been glued to his chair for 14 hours straight.
Artist | DNxIO has become an essential part of their workflow, and Mad Old Nut is using it for everything from finishing to ingest to transcoding. They even use it for tape ingest on shows like Aquarius, Walking Dead, and Fear Of The Walking Dead. Ulman says they’re planning on rolling out Artist | DNxIO to more and more Avid stations in the near future.
