Touch-Screen iPad Control for Dolby Atmos in Pro Tools by Neyrinck
As founder of Neyrinck I have had a long relationship with Pro Tools plug-ins, going all the way back to when I created the first reverb plug-in, D-Verb and the first natural sounding digital EQ, the Focusrite D2 (all running on the old DSP Farms!). Several plug-ins and years later I started my own company and developed a host of Dolby AAX Native and DSP plug-ins for Pro Tools. So it made sense for me to look at how the Dolby Atmos plug-in in Pro Tools could be controlled from smartphones and tablets.
The Dolby Atmos plug-in is used to create spatial 3D panning for object tracks in Pro Tools on the dubbing stage. The 3D panning data from the Dolby Atmos plug-in is sent to the Dolby Rendering and Mastering Unit, otherwise known as the RMU, together with direct audio output of the object track.
Having developed the V-Control Pro 2 system, that includes the V-Console and V-Panner apps for controlling Pro Tools, I decided to add Dolby Atmos control to allow engineers to be able to use tactile control to position objects in the 3D space.

The new Dolby Atmos pan screen in V-Panner, and in the V-Console iPad app, directly controls the object panning in the Dolby Atmos plug-in allowing for more creative movement control of the object from the iPad screen. The Dolby Atmos screen includes controls for Z Elevation, and Wedge, Ceiling and Sphere Elevation modes as well as an object size control, mirroring controls in the plug-in.
This is the first and only touch-screen Dolby Atmos controller available. The apps are compatible with iPad, iPhones as well as Android tablets and phones. When using an iPad, V-Panner and V-Console can connect directly to the computer, without WiFi, using the Apple lightning to USB, or 30-pin to USB, cables which provides ultra-fast response and compatibility with secure facilities.
V-Control Pro 2 system annual license can be purchased for only US$49.99 from the Neyrinck Store. A limited version free trial is also available.
