How to Roundtrip a Sequence from Autodesk Smoke to Avid Media Composer

By in Tutorial Thursday, Video Editing

Autodesk Smoke 2016 offers a bi-direction workflow with Avid Media Composer using the AAF interchange format. This allows the two applications to co-exist in a production pipeline, and round-trip metadata, media and sequences where necessary. Autodesk Smoke also supports the Avid DNxHD codec allowing both applications to recognize an industry standard format.

In this video, we run through the workflow of publishing an AAF sequence from Autodesk Smoke with media and FX, which is then conformed in Avid Media Composer.

This includes a detailed examination of sequence preparation as well as export settings in Autodesk Smoke. Next, we import the AAF into Avid Media Composer and the media is imported and associated with the sequence via the Batch Import tool.

This is a great workflow for passing creative editorial data between applications as well as reconstructing the sequence in Avid Media Composer in order to facilitate creative versioning after online and VFX finishing in Autodesk Smoke.
