Updates from the Avid Customer Association’s Strategy Advisory Council on Security, Sports and Education

As the Avid liaison to the Strategy Advisory Council, I am happy to report that, with the help of its members, the Avid Customer Association has seen an exciting amount of growth and momentum throughout the year. Together, we have accomplished multiple achievements, including contributions to Avid’s metadata strategy and standards, input to currently launched collaboration tools, insights on Avid’s hardware roadmap strategy, and more. Key accomplishments of the Strategy Advisory Council included the creation of the Education, Sports, and Security Ad Hoc Committees.

These ad hoc committees have seen much action since their introductions, thanks to their experienced and knowledgeable members. Each ad hoc committee is greatly impacting Avid, and coming off of our Q3 leadership meeting, I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you some highlights.

Security Ad Hoc Committee

This committee was established with the goal of assisting Avid in identifying the appropriate set of products, services, and guidelines to best meet the needs of the community around security. To begin work, Avid members issued the group a security survey which was distributed with the purpose of helping Avid understand the security problems and challenges the media industry is currently facing. The survey results indicated disaster recovery planning was the highest ranking priority from respondents. These results led Avid to publish a disaster recovery white paper, which can be viewed here.  Disaster Recovery remains an active topic in committee discussions. Other areas the committee has prioritized include improved tools to detect and provide alerts relating to security incidents, base-level security audits for Avid products, and the importance of tools to proactively identify issues while they are happening. Coming up, the group has plans to distribute the security survey to a broader audience.

At the group’s suggestion, Avid is developing a visual watermarking feature for MediaCentral | UX which would allow an administrator to enable visual watermarking of all images and media playback in MediaCentral | UX with the username of the person accessing the content, date and time, and the name of the asset.

 

Sports Ad Hoc Committee

This committee was formed to provide guidance about emerging sports workflows and how Avid can deliver solutions that help meet new challenges.   With the recent acquisition of Orad and its existing sport product portfolio, Avid is now better positioned to deliver more complete sports workflows. The committee has been focusing on strategic items, which include the challenges with managing realtime sports metadata, 4K, logging from a distance, remote editing, sports graphics workflows, security, disaster recovery redundancy, archiving, and using EVS servers in an Avid workflow. This committee will continue to help Avid develop new offerings for sport news, live events, and leagues and teams.

 

Education Ad Hoc Committee

This Committee has held many deep discussions around Avid Everywhere and what it means to the next generation of students. Members have provided Avid with feedback on certification programs, existing installations, entry points for collaborative environments, Pro Tools |  First and Media Composer | First, expanding institutional offerings to include iNEWS and Pro Tools, S6 Certifications, and how to foster new collaborative and creative opportunities.

The committee continues to provide feedback on the topics and technologies that students have to learn today that are job relevant, the role that online learning plays for institutions, how to educate the next generation of industry professionals for this marketplace and career paths, how students move through institutions and eventually find a job, and how Avid can make the First products more interactive. Additionally, Avid is working to expand the reach of the Avid Learning Partner Program (ALP), to focus on new content from Avid, blended content (ALP/Avid), and online learning.

Avid continues to rely on the insight of the ACA Strategy Advisory Council to help set strategic direction and develop solutions that address the most pressing issues facing the media industry.  I look forward to continuing to work with the ACA Strategy Advisory Council and the various ad-hoc committees.
