Demystifying Asset Management and Workflows at SVG’s Sports Asset Management and Storage Forum

By in Sports Production

Last week, I attended SVG’s Sports Asset Management and Storage Forum in New York City, where 240 industry leaders shared their knowledge of the business of asset management, the latest technology and what’s in store for the future. This year marked the forum’s 10th anniversary and Avid’s presence was strong, with many of our customers speaking at the event as well as a couple of Avid speakers.

The first panel of the day, “The State of the SAMS Industry,” set the tone for the conference and featured some of the most influential players in the industry. Avid customers Scott McBurney, associate commissioner for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), and WWE senior director of media asset management Bryan Staffaroni discussed best practices to make assets easy to find and how to overcome challenges when sharing assets across multiple institutions.

I hosted a session on “The Next MAM Frontier: Teams and Franchises Get Into Asset-Management Game,” featuring Avid customer Paul Hodges of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.

Paul explained how Emmy Award-winning Warriors Studio, the team’s small media production arm, invested in the Avid MediaCentral Platform to create fast-turnaround, larger-than-life content for one of the premier franchises in the NBA.

Paul’s humor shone through as he explained how the Avid system helped him to infuse his team with more discipline around processes and managing assets. When I asked him why he chose the Avid platform, he said simply, “The Avid Everywhere concept sold me. Moving into a new arena, I wanted a partner that was developing new technology and willing to try new things with us.”

For the final session of the day, my colleague Régis André, senior director of product management at Avid, joined the panel on “The Road to 8K: Next-Gen Unified Storage and Multi-Resolution Archiving,” discussing the growing demand for large storage as file sizes get larger with the popularity of 4K and (soon to be a reality) 8K.

With everyone looking at on-premise storage and archiving, and waiting for the inflection point that will force them to use cloud-based storage, Régis explained how Avid NEXIS storage is the perfect bridge between on-premise and cloud-hosted storage. Régis also discussed how Avid’s asset management strategy is already cloud-enabled and can reduce the complexity of managing 8K through proxy- and remote-editing capabilities that are already in use today for HD.

With both of our sessions, we aimed to demystify asset management and workflows, explain how Avid Everywhere is playing out in this field, and set the focus on the users and ROI, rather than just technology. The Sports Asset Management and Storage Forum was a great event, and I’m so excited for what’s in store for the future of the industry.
