Leveraging Mobile Devices for Field Reporting

Continuing our video blog series on Next-Generation Newsrooms, here we look at mobile apps that empower field journalists.

Following last week’s blog and video about empowering journalists with tools they need to put complete stories together, this week we’re going to focus on collaborative tools for field reporters.

The cultural shift in how viewers consume the news means that news organizations today are tasked with delivering content across multiple platforms 24/7, in addition to traditional broadcast news shows. News directors and station managers are looking for ways to keep teams out in the field covering stories for as much of their shift as possible. To do this, they need tools that will empower their field reporters to be productive without having to return to the station frequently.

To optimize field workflows, Avid has developed native mobile apps for iOS and Android devices. These apps extend newsroom capabilities to connect journalists and contributors in the field and in the studio in real time. Using the mobile app saves time not only for the field reporters, but also for the producers back at the station by eliminating many manual steps in the news production process and streamlining communication. Reporters can focus more of their time on what they do best — crafting and telling stories.

With these next-generation apps, reporters can check assignments, stay connected by browsing any iNEWS folders and video associated to stories, break stories and make updates to scripts as they happen — all while they’re on location. They can even add production cues for graphics, video playback and other information directly to the story. This connection to the iNEWS system reduces many manual steps and optimizes the workflow and communication between field teams and everyone else connected to the system.

When it’s time for a live report, the mobile app transforms into a portable prompter, replacing scribbled notes. By viewing any associated video through the app before a live shot, journalists are better prepared to speak to what the viewers are seeing during the broadcast.

“The MediaCentral | UX app on my iPad is like having iNEWS in my lap.”

Not only does this mobile tool empower field teams to work remotely, anchors in the studio can use the MediaCentral | UX mobile app to replace printed scripts, reducing human error when last-minute changes occur.  Any changes in rundowns and scripts are reflected immediately in the app to anyone connected to the newsroom system, regardless of their location. This can also greatly reduce printing and ink costs. And producers no longer have to be tied to their desks to stay on top of story development — they can approve stories on-the-go.
