Mixing a Scorpions Live Show on a Laptop—Hans Martin Buff Explains the Process

By in Music Creation, Pro Mixing

Hans Martin Buff is a famous german mix engineer with international merits. Amongst other high profile gigs he became Prince’s personal engineer for 4 years in 1996 after working already as an assistant at Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis. Since then he has been mixing as a freelance engineer for clients from around the world. We caught him between projects with his studio-on-the-go system in a hotel room and later at the Scorpions’ studio, putting the finishing touches on the live concert DVD that comes with their Return to Forever release.

“Pro Tools is the road I am walking on and it goes everywhere with me!”

—Hans Martin Buff, mix engineer

Hans Martin really likes the scalability of his laptop-based approach. In the following video, he demonstrates how with the help of the Pro Tools | HD Native Thunderbolt adapter he easily connects to the Scorpions’ studio Pro Tools | HDX rig and the SLL Duality console for the final touches.
