Pro Tools Pricing Demystified

By in Audio Post, Music Creation, Pro Mixing

The recent announcement around the Pro Tools pricing updates have raised some questions. To help answer them, the Pro Tools team would like to take a moment to explain and provide more clarity into what exactly is changing and what options you have.

We are still offering both Perpetual and Subscription Licensing

Pro Tools and Pro Tools | Ultimate are purchasable as either a perpetual or subscription license. For example:

• $599 – Use Pro Tools forever

• $199 – Renew annually to continue getting access to the latest features and improvements as well as support

• $299 – If your renewal lapses, you will need to purchase a “Reinstatement” plan

• $299 – Use Pro Tools for the term of your subscription (e.g. 1-year paid up front)

• Get instant access to all the latest features and improvements

• If your subscription lapses, simply re-subscribe if you’d like Pro Tools again

While we are continuing to offer perpetual licensing, subscription is becoming increasingly popular. If you are new to Pro Tools, then subscription is the most affordable option. Plus, internally it enables our development team to adopt a model of greater flexibility to deliver highly requested features and improvements.

The most cost-wise option is to subscribe annually and pay up front. Next best, is an annual subscription paid in monthly intervals. When you choose to pay up front, you essentially get 2 months “free” verses paying monthly. Finally, the monthly payment option is best for users that want Pro Tools on a project-by-project basis.

What Changed on July 1?

No licensing options are being discontinued on July 1 (perpetual, renewal, reinstatement, or subscription). If you are on an active Pro Tools 1-Year Subscription, Paid Monthly or Monthly Subscription, Paid Monthly the price increases do not apply to you. You can continue paying your current subscription price for as long as you stay on your plan.

New crossgrade options and how they work

For perpetual customers that want the flexibility of a subscription, we are introducing special crossgrade options that offer reduced subscription pricing for two years. This is how it works:

Got a Pro Tools perpetual license?

Save $200 USD/year for two years (33% off)

when you crossgrade to annual subscription

Got a Pro Tools | Ultimate perpetual license?

Save $400 USD/year for two years (60% off)

when you crossgrade to annual subscription

After two years, standard subscription pricing kicks back in. For perpetual customers that are not on an active Updates & Support plan, crossgrading is an excellent option to get access to the latest features and improvements.

Save up 60% for 2 years
Product Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Total
Pro Tools Crossgrade $99 $99 $299 $299 $796
Pro Tools | Ultimate Crossgrade $599 $599 $999 $999 $3,196

And depending on your current plan and status, it may be less expensive than reinstating. For example:
