Play Together — Avid MediaCentral | Editorial Management

Avid’s past, present and future has, is and always will be about helping creative people play together.  Even 27 years ago, when the original Avid1/Media Composer was released, it was all about collaboration.  Back then, the big technological breakthrough that took place was the ability to get 30 highly compressed frames playing from a hard disk in a single second.  So, the concept of an NLE being able to take a project from start to finish was not just financially impractical, but pretty much impossible from a technology standpoint.  In light of that, for a digital nonlinear editing system to revolutionize the industry, it had to function effectively as part of a bigger picture.  It had to have truly solid media management and interop capabilities.

Although professional editors often cite Media Composer’s timeline model and the ease with which they can manipulate a cut as to why they choose Avid, none of that would have mattered back in the 90’s if they couldn’t easily bring all their “offline” editing work forward into the other parts of the process; the color timing and correction, the sound mixing and editing, and finally the mastering and conforming.  Here we are in 2018 and all those things are still important.  For no better reason than that in professional post workflows you have highly skilled people who specialize in specific parts of the creative process.  Collaboration will always be the answer for getting work done faster and at the best possible quality.  Helping to make all that happen has always been Avid’s mission.

There are two key components to Media Composer’s leadership position in collaborative workflows.  The first would obviously be Avid’s shared storage.  When the original Avid Unity centralized storage product was introduced over 20 years ago, this was a huge leap forward in how post teams worked together. It was where collaboration changed from being about a fluid “linear” workflow, into a situation where creative teams were working in parallel and rapidly accelerating the post process.

The Amazing Race

It’s no coincidence that around the same time reality television production really took off.  Shows like Survivor and Amazing Race have enormous shooting ratios and extremely tight deadlines.  The only way to pull off something like that is to have a small army of editors, assistants and producers all working in parallel in an environment that is intuitive, responsive and very stable.  To this day, Avid’s intelligent shared storage products, from our original Unity systems (which are STILL actively in use throughout the world) to our new NEXIS line, form the backbone of thousands of production environments.

Despite all the focus on the storage itself, and the storage file system, it’s Avid’s bin model that was really the magic behind helping editors to collaborate effectively on the same project.  And that’s proven by how prominently Media Composer and NEXIS are deployed throughout professional post and broadcast.  In those environments, media and asset management are things that need to be completely reliable and not disruptive to the creative process.  Editors are able to work together without even having to really think about how they’re sharing clips and bins with assistants or other editors.

Avid NEXIS

Although Media Composer and NEXIS are the key parts to most professional post environments, NEXIS also fully supports Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro X, DaVinci Resolve, EDIUS, and of course our DAW, Pro Tools.  While none of those third-party solutions have the same level of bin sharing capabilities as Media Composer, you can easily have them be part of a hybrid workflow, as many people often do.  Supporting third-party solutions is obviously a good thing, because it gives the creative teams more flexibility on how they want to support different projects.  But, as I mentioned earlier, Avid’s true goal is to help teams get their best work done faster.  And that’s where the next revolution in post workflows comes in with our new MediaCentral | Editorial Management.

MediaCentral | Editorial Management

Technically you’d have to classify it as asset management, but it’s more like collaboration management, as it does some things that have never been possible before.  I mentioned that Avid’s bin model was a key part of how we made collaborative post easy and reliable.  But even that was limited to a world where you needed both a Media Composer system as well as someone trained to use it.  The game changing part of Editorial Management is the new HyperBin architecture.  Simply through an easy to use web UI called MediaCentral | Cloud UX, anyone can browse and search all of the media they have access to on NEXIS.  More importantly, the user can also create Media Composer bins and folders right from that same web UI.  So, an assistant could literally be moving dailies around and prepping bins for an editor from anywhere in the world, provided they can get to the network that the NEXIS is on.

Media management, something that most editors don’t want to spend too much time on, now gets distributed out so that it’s something the entire team can take part in.  And again, you don’t need Media Composer, or even someone trained on Media Composer to do it.  That said, Media Composer editors also get to enjoy some additional benefits as well. The same UI in the web browser also exists as a panel in Media Composer.  The beauty of that is that editors can now easily search for clips and bins across all their NEXIS workspaces, not just the active project that they have open.  This will really speed up the process of finding the exact right clips you need.  And, in keeping with the theme of openness, we’re also developing the same panel for Adobe Premiere.

Meeting the Needs of Modern-day Post Production with MediaCentral | Editorial Management

The growth in connected consumer TVs and mobile devices, combined with more affordable and faster broadband coverage, is rapidly making 4K/UHD content ubiquitous. Post production studios are upping their game and equipping their facilities for 4K/UHD but there are other factors at play which make modern-day post production more challenging than it’s ever been.

Turnaround times are still high on the agenda, of course. There’s little or no premium to be charged for creating higher resolution content and you do not want to be taking four times as long to deliver four times the data. Likewise, it also means four times the amount of storage capacity too.

But a less well-publicized side effect of the digital age is impacting post production: we’re just shooting more stuff – a LOT more stuff – and shooting ratios are skyrocketing. Consider this: George Miller’s 2015 action blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road had a shooting ratio of 240:1, with 480 hours of raw footage. That’s more than two-and-a-half times the shooting ratio of Apocalypse Now (95:1), which has a running time over 30 minutes longer! (source: VashiVisuals)

Avid MediaCentral | Editorial Management

Movies are rare beasts though, compared with the staple of most small-to-medium post houses: unscripted and reality TV. Here, the combination of cheap, digital acquisition and recording media invariably leads to even bigger shooting ratios, sometimes up to 400:1.

So, a very big challenge for today’s editor is that, with so much more media, it just takes longer and longer to find stuff. ‘Asset management’ is a dry and uninspiring term, especially in such a creative environment, but it’s essential in today’s post production workflows, not just because it manages media and available capacity, but because it acts as your own in-house search engine for your content.

Media Composer has a long-established reputation for rock-solid media management, but the asset management systems that grew up around it were invariably more suited to broadcast production than post. For larger facilities, the investment in retraining staff to learn a new navigation tool was viable, but for smaller post houses, who typically hire a lot of freelance talent, the benefits of enterprise MAMs were often undercut by the cost and effort to onboard talent.

The development of the much more open and integrated MediaCentral platform, has given Avid the opportunity to develop a module that is much more in step with the needs of modern post production. That module is called MediaCentral | Editorial Management, and what is unique about it is that it’s built around a concept that is VERY familiar to editors – shared projects and bins.

Although MediaCentral | Editorial Management is designed for smaller creative or editorial teams, it is extensible enough to grow up to 25 users in its first version and offers a framework of additional options to adapt to a range of workflows. It brings a new layer of file management, as well as extended collaborative capabilities to Avid Media Composer workflows.

Everything is about speed and ease of use. Navigation is familiar to anyone who knows Media Composer, and the indexing schema the indexing schema is now directly linked to up-to-date bin activity, making it much faster and easier to search shared projects and bins – even if they’re not open – and add media from Avid NEXIS too.

You can search for markers, rename clips and add comments to clips. You can browse through non-Avid media and link it to bins. We’ve even added phonetic search to save time trawling through media libraries for soundbites. This is a huge time-saver and cannot be underestimated. The hours an editor gets back can be the difference between being able to put more creative thought into a project, or just getting to pick up the kids from school on time.

Because MediaCentral | Editorial Management has been developed from the outset to be tightly integrated with Avid NEXIS shared storage, it’s very easy to install and configure – again, the learning curve is kept to minimum. The MediaCentral Core indexing engine and service keep track of all projects and media stored on Avid NEXIS, so everyone on the team can view what’s available in real-time.

One huge benefit of the MediaCentral playback architecture is that producers, or assistant editors prepping a project, can connect to MediaCentral | Editorial Management via a web client. This means that they can access clips from a remote location, from a home office, or while traveling; they do not have to be directly connected to the Avid NEXIS.

Developing the new MediaCentral eco-system has been Avid’s largest-ever engineering project, and by design, will extend into many different content creation environments. Step back in time two decades to taped-based media production. You would quite likely find a ‘patchwork quilt’ workflow, Scotch tape’d together with equal measures of inspiration and perspiration. Within the last decade, converting to a file-based workflow harmonized the content and yielded efficiencies, but the digital tools required to stitch together the silos – asset management, news rundown, editing, storage, graphics, transcoding and playout – continue to present a challenge for anyone in the business of content creation.

Turbocharging Terabytes with Teamwork — Avid NEXIS at IBC 2017

Since inventing storage virtualization nearly two decades ago, Avid has consistently led storage innovation tailored for the media industry. Avid and Microsoft Showcase Joint Cloud Strategy at MESA’s Media & Entertainment Day and SIGGRAPH

Recently Avid participated in two events that underscore today’s media-anywhere environment and the importance of the cloud in that journey. In the same way that Avid led the industry three decades ago, Avid is once again at the forefront in helping its customers lead the next evolution of creative freedom—in the cloud.

Partnering for the cloud journey

As we announced at NAB earlier this year, Avid has formed a Strategic Cloud Alliance with Microsoft to integrate the Azure cloud hosting platform with the Avid MediaCentral platform, allowing customers to quickly and easily leverage the efficiencies, flexibility and agility that cloud workflows provide. By choosing Azure as our preferred cloud hosting platform, we’re allowing media and entertainment entities, creative teams and artists to migrate to the cloud at their own pace and on their own terms.

Demonstrating the power: Microsoft Media & Entertainment Day

We had the opportunity to showcase our breakthrough cloud-based strategy to more than 300 media and entertainment professionals at the Microsoft Media & Entertainment Day, held July 25, 2017, at the Microsoft Technology Center in New York.

The Media & Entertainment Services Alliance (MESA), an organization of industry-leading developers and vendors, including Avid and Microsoft, hosted this inaugural event where Industry experts shared case studies and solutions showcases on data, analytics, security, the cloud and artificial intelligence.

Amid three tracks of programming and two floors of the latest technology updates from Microsoft, their technology partners and customers, we demonstrated our cloud-based solution, showing exactly how media organizations and creative professionals can quickly and easily leverage the efficiencies and elastic capacity of the cloud.

In his keynote on “Optimizing Video Workflows,” Senior Director of the Avid Global Center of Excellence Craig Dwyer noted several trends, including the exponential rise in content creation, multiplatform and Over-the-Top (OTT) distribution, and personalized media consumption. His remarks were part of the event’s “Video in the Microsoft Cloud: Where Collaboration Meets Workflows” session track.

Dwyer put the power of the joint strategy into perspective. “We’re now going to see that driving efficiencies at scale suddenly starts to make a lot of sense, especially for large organizations that have thousands of people who are using their systems at hundreds of locations,” he said. “Our customers now want to remove the friction between their different systems and create a much more fluidly-connected supply chain. Building an ecosystem of partner-solutions around the Azure cloud will create a lot of efficiency.”

Innovation in Editing at SIGGRAPH

Avid Solutions Specialist Michael Krulik demoed our Azure-based cloud solution for creative professionals at the SIGGRAPH graphics and animation conference, which took place August 1-3, 2017, in Los Angeles.

SIGGRAPH is known as an event for and about innovation and innovators. And this year was no exception. As one of six “partner pods” at Microsoft’s SIGGRAPH booth, Krulik and his team showed how Avid and Azure are advancing a synergistic cloud strategy that will allow media companies to migrate seamlessly to the cloud.

For people who were curious about why Avid was in Microsoft’s booth, the demo brought immediate understanding. As Krulik explained, “everybody is used to MediaComposer on a laptop but tapping into the data center through a virtual machine set up is very compelling and bring entirely new levels of creative freedom and flexibility.”
